So, while in the coaching mode you might be directly equipping
someone with a new skill, when you are being authoritative or
democratic the aim is to empower and inspire, giving people the
vision or the space to make the most of their ability. The great thing
about the human condition is our endless capacity to improve and to
go on learning. This is true of you as a leader, as we hope this book
makes clear. It is equally true of every single member of staff whose
potential lies dormant in many organizations. Sales staff may be
empowered if they learn a new language, or if they are enthused to
meet the targets that you set.
In this way, delegation can lead to a multiplication of your feeling of
achievement. You have coached Jenny to be a project manager, you
have encouraged Luis to step up to the post of finance director, but
most of all, your vision and authority inspired the whole
organization to improve service, reducing complaints and costs,
because everyone wants to serve you and the customers.
Concluding notes
We began this book with the observation that your staff pick up their
clues for selecting their behaviour, priorities and tasks from you, the
leader; and that behaviour is at least as important as strategy and
objectives. We hope you didn’t feel paranoid about that, but, rather,
curious as to the effect that personal development can have on
business success. In turn we hope that this curiosity has led to your
cultivation of feedback, and a commitment to the development of
self-awareness and leadership skills that we have set out in the
preceding chapters. We hope also that this has given you the
platform from which to begin to exhibit flair and confidence as you
see yourself and those around you succeeding.

The whole of leadership could be said to be creating
the climate in which others can shine.
The process is simple to conceive, but can be challenging to apply, as
we are developing or correcting some deeply rooted behavioural
traits. It’s a case of strengthening your awareness of how you come
across to others; developing the known skills and styles that are
associated with success, and applying this knowledge continually.
This unlocks the potential of your people.
We hope you are engaged in the journey. Your staff are still watching
you. But maybe they are happier with what they see.
