LinkedIn is a business-focused social networking site used by many in the game industry. Its game writing group features discussion boards and job listings. Note that you need to join the group before you can access its home page.

Featuring articles, blogs, news, and special features covering every aspect of the game industry, Gamasutra is an excellent resource for anyone who is or wants to be part of the industry. It also features an extensive job board with listings from many top game developers and publishers.

Game Developers Conference

The Game Developers Conference is a yearly gathering focusing on the creation and advancement of video and computer games. Key features include a large number of lectures, presentations, and roundtables by notable industry figures, an expo showcasing the latest game-related technology, and a career fair. Aside from the main conference in San Francisco, California, the GDC also hosts yearly conferences in Austin, Texas (which features the annual Game Narrative Summit), Canada, Europe, and China.

The International Game Developers Association is a nonprofit, membership-based group for people in the game industry. It hosts local meetings in many cities, contains numerous special interest groups, and publishes various game-related articles and white papers. Its mailing lists and meetups are excellent opportunities to get to know other people in the industry.
