The first step is to download the IOInsight software:
- Go to .
- From the main page, read the license, then download the ZIP file. Unzip the file.
- Log in to vSphere Web Client and go to the Hosts and Clusters view.
- Right-click on your cluster and select Deploy OVF Template....
- In the Deploy OVF Template wizard, select the .ova file you downloaded. Click on Next.
- Enter a name for the appliance and select a datacenter. Click on Next.
- Select a host or cluster. Click on Next.
- Review the details. Click on Next.
- Select the storage location. Click on Next.
- Select the destination network. Click on Next.
- Review the settings and click on Finish.
- Once the VM has been created, power it on.
Now that the IOInsight appliance is created and running, log in and run a test:
- Click on the IOInsight VM in vSphere Web Client, then go to the Summary tab. Find the IP address for the appliance, then browse to https://<VM_IP> using Chrome or Safari:
- Enter the hostname or IP of your vCenter Server and login credentials. Click on Login.
- On the left-hand side, you will see the hosts attached to vCenter. Click on the + next to a host that contains the VM you want to analyze and enter the root password.
- This will show the VMs running on that host. Expand the VM you want to analyze, then select the drive(s) you want to analyze.
- It is recommended that you select eight or less VMDK files to reduce overhead.
- On the right-hand side of the web page, enter a name for the test and select a duration.
- Select Basic I/O Analyzer, then click on Start. This will take you to the results page. The screen will show the graphs after a few seconds:
On this particular VM, I was running Iometer with a 32 k test with 50 percent reads. We can see that IOInsight correctly identified the Read/Write ratio and I/O Size Distribution.
