The first step is to download Iometer to the VM where we want to run the tests:
- Download the appropriate executable from http://www.iometer.org/doc/downloads.html.
- Once downloaded, run the Iometer.exe file.
Iometer requires some setup before it can be started. For these tests, I created a second 10 GB hard drive labeled E: on the VM where the Iometer tests will be performed. By default, Iometer creates one manager (with the same name as your VM) and four workers (Worker 1 through 4). We will run the tests with the defaults, but you can create additional managers and workers depending on your testing needs:
- Click on the plus sign next to the manager to see the four default workers.
- You can add or remove workers as required.
- For each of the workers, do the following:
- Click on the worker.
- Click on the Disk Targets tab and select the drive you want to target:
-
- Click on the Access Specifications tab and add the All in one (at the bottom) option to Assigned Access Specifications. If you have a specific block size, read/write ratio, or randomness that you want to test, select one of the specifications from the list. You can also click on New to create your own custom specification:
- Click back on the manager in the Topology section.
- Click on the Results Display tab and change Update Frequency to 5.
- Click on the Start Tests button with the green flag icon.
- Select a location for the results file from the pop-up window.
- Wait for the test files to be created.
- When the test is run, you will see the results in the Results Display tab.
When the test is running, Iometer will look something like this:
