The Road Ahead
Hospital process eciency and eectiveness are growing needs for all healthcare organizations
today. A major driving force for process improvement is the internal management engineer as a
trusted, unbiased resource. is chapter explored the background, tools, management techniques,
and collaboration opportunities of typical internal management engineering consulting teams and
used examples taken from the author’s own experiences of leading an IME department. Key ideas
for internal engineering consulting teams are to remain exible, always, and quickly adapt to the
needs of the organization you serve. Understand the strategic and operational goals of your insti-
tution and focus project eorts on achieving those goals. Always track projects and demonstrate
the nancial value-added impact of your projects. Where possible, partner with local or regional
academic institutions to develop an undergraduate intern or co-op program. Finally, keep an open
mind and be able to see the road ahead, and anticipate the challenges and the solutions you can
provide to your organization.
