Traffic Manager configuration

Once the Traffic Manager profile is created, you can check its configuration by performing the following steps:

  1. Navigate to the Traffic Manager you have just created, as shown in the following screenshot:
Figure 7.4: Traffic Manager overview
  1. You can disable the profile by clicking on Disable profile, in the case that you do not need it at the time being but might need it later
  2. Under SETTINGS, click on Configuration and the blade of configuration will be opened, wherein you can configure the following:
    • Routing method: You can change the routing method for this profile by clicking on the drop-down list and selecting the desired routing method.
    • DNS time to live (TTL): When the client queries the Traffic Manager for the first time, it caches in the local cache, so the client does not have to go through the resolving process every time he tries to request something from the client. The value you specify here would be the period that the client can cache the Traffic Manager and has to update its DNS entries after this period again.
    • Endpoint monitor settings: These settings are responsible for monitoring whether the service is up and running or not. The settings are as follows:
      • Protocol: Here, you need to specify the protocol used by the endpoint, such as HTTP, HTTPs, and TCP.
      • Port: This is the port number via which the client accesses the endpoint service.
      • Path: The default is /, which means the root directory. However, you can enter a complete path with the filename.
    • Probing interval: This is the period after which the Traffic Manager will send a probe to make sure that the service is healthy. You have two options in the drop-down list, 30 seconds for normal probing and 10 seconds for fast probing.
    • Tolerated number of failures: Here, you need to specify the number of failures that can be tolerated before considering the endpoint as unhealthy.
    • Probe timeout: This is the period after which the probe will be considered to have timed out.
