Ethan and Lisa Dunham founded Fonthead
in 1994. Over the years the Wilmington,
Delaware–based foundry has built a solid
library made up of a range of original con-
temporary fonts. Many of Fonthead’s fonts
have appeared on posters and websites and
in books and other various applications.
Some of its best-selling typefaces include
Drawzing, ClickBits, and Tachyon.

Jonathan Hoefl er (92) and Tobias Frere-
Jones (87) began working together in 1999
after Frere-Jones left Font Bureau (127). To
date the duo has designed more than 500
typefaces, including personal work and col-
laborations through their foundry, Hoefl er
& Frere-Jones.
The foundry’s typefaces have been used
in almost every format, including news-
papers, magazines, and museums, with
clientele including the Wall Street Journal,
Martha Stewart Living, Nike, Pentagram,
GQ, Esquire, Business 2.0, the New York
Times, and the New York Times Magazine.
LetterPerfect, founded in 1986
by lettering artist Garrett Boge,
supplies more than fi fty unique
typeface designs for both Macin-
tosh and Windows platforms.
The foundry has two dis-
tinctive lines: Viva la Font and
Legacy of Letters. The Viva la
Font library consists of script and
display faces such as Destijl and
Longhand. Legacy of Letters, a col-
laboration with fellow lettering
artist Paul Shaw, focuses on type
designs based on lettering models
from historical periods such as
Kolo, Donatello, and Old Claude.

Dutch designer Luc(as) de Groot (91), who also founded Berlin-based
FontFabrik, www.fontfabrik.com, founded LucasFonts in Berlin in
2000. The foundry specializes in creating original and custom quality
typefaces with extended type families—supplied to encourage experi-
mentation—as well as in redesigning existing fonts. Notable typefaces
include Thesis, TheSans, and TheSerif.
Cornel Windlin and Stephan
Müller founded Lineto in 1993.
In 1998 the Switzerland-based
company set up Lineto.com (www
.lineto.com) as an electronic way
to distribute its typefaces, as well
as other designers’ work. All of
Lineto’s typefaces are sold exclu-
sively through its website, except
for earlier work—aptly called
“Lineto Legacy”—still sold through
FontFont. Some of Lineto’s notable
work includes Le Corbusier, Valen-
tine, and Cobra.
