Chapter 9. Network Operating Systems and Clients

OBJECTIVES

This chapter covers the following CompTIA-specified objectives for the “Network Implementation” section of the Network+ exam:

Identify the basic capabilities (i.e., client support, interoperability, authentication, file and print services, application support, and security) of the following server operating systems:

  • Unix/Linux

  • NetWare

  • Windows

  • Macintosh

  • Operating systems are the means by which functionality is provided on a network. Each of the common operating systems has its own features and characteristics, and a capable network administrator must be familiar with them.

Identify the basic capabilities of client workstations (i.e., client connectivity, local security mechanisms, and authentication).

  • Knowing how workstation operating systems connect to the network and accommodate users is an important part of the network administrator's skill set.
