The Java-based Just in Time (JIT) compiler was enabled in Java 10 so that it could be used as an experimental JIT compiler for Linux/x64 platforms. The Java-based JIT compiler is referred to as Graal. 

This change was made in the hope that experimentation would serve as a proof of concept for adding the JIT compiler to the JDK.
