Coding animations Now you can create,
draw, animate, whatever you want! Everything
gets drawn to virtualDisplay. I recommend
looking at example_anim.pde and example_blips.
pde for some examples of coding animations
and how to draw them to the virtual canvas

Games — Add an input device or gamepad and
make playable games. Tetris, Snake, and Pong
all work great on low-res pixel displays like
this. This implementation of Tetris (Figures

Interactive art For my art installations, I
often make flip-dots interactive with touch-free
devices such as the Leap Motion hand tracker
(Figure
H
) and Intel RealSense depth camera
(Figure
I
), or just a simple accelerometer
(Figure

FLIP 7-SEGMENT DIGITS
A similar product made by AlfaZeta are their
XY7 Flip-Digit panels. These are your standard
7-segment digit design but with all the advantages
and beauty of Flip-Dots. No LEDs here, just
magnets and plastic. The control board uses the
exact same protocol as the Flip-Dots XY5 so it is
relativity easy to use; I’ve also published a control
app for them (github.com/owenmcateer/FlipDigits).
These are perfect for displaying numbers
(obviously), text (with some character limitations
like K, M, X, Y), and images that take advantage of
the linear geometry of the segments. You can also
try to simulate grayscale with the segments in a
digit-per-pixel setup, but you’d need a large display
to pull this off.
