MUSIC.
It makes us fall in love.
It makes us cry. It is
the anthem to revolutions. It’s universally
beloved yet infinitely diverse.
I listen to music all night and day while
I work and play. Live concerts are my
obsession and have changed my life in a
million ways. Communities built around
musical genres and production enrich my
existence to no end. Consuming it, creating
it — music is my life.
When we were discussing themes for this
volume of Make: and the topic of music came
up, my already irrepressible enthusiasm
went intergalactic. I’ve always loved music
and surrounded myself with music and
music lovers. When I first started getting
intro electronics, I needed a “target” for my
desire to learn the tools and techniques of
this field. I started with simple learn-to-
solder kits that made little bleepy-bloopy
sounds (in fact they now live in a bin called
“Bleep Bloop”) such as nootropic design’s
Audio Hacker and DJ shields for Arduino, as
well as Bleep Labs’ theremin-like Pico Paso.
One of the most exciting convergences of
music and DIY right now is the burgeoning
synth DIY (SDIY) scene, which we dive into
with modular synthesizers (page 40). Build
your own simple synth and learn what
makes it squeal with the Mt. Brighton
Avalanche Oscillator (page 48). Go low-tech
with a great-sounding Soda Bottle Marimba
you can build for pennies (page 60). Or 3D
print your own speakers and instruments
(page 64).
These and many more make up our special
DIY Music section and you’ll find more
cool sound circuits throughout this issue,
like artist Kelly Heaton’s beautiful Nightjar
project on page 22. From birds to boards to
Buchla, there’s something for everyone!
So fall in love, cry, start a revolution,
attend or perform a live show, build a project
from these pages — immerse yourself in
the world of music however you like, as we
together form the anthem of our lives.
