t takes a village to raise a child, and it takes a team to fabricate a 20-foot techno-cephalopod. With
a glistening skin composed of colorful ceramic tiles, and LED-lit plastic domes for suckers, Lucy
the octopus is the brainchild of artist Peter Hazel, who has made a name for himself creating giant
animals such as the massive crocodile Niloticus and 10-foot-tall rattlesnake Green Mojave.
Hazel and his team of metal fabricators, ceramicists, and welders have been hard at work
bringing this eight-armed piece of art to life. Keith Williamson of Electric Fire Design has been
toiling to bring light into the 395 luminous accents, coming up with custom electronics and code.
The LEDs flicker and fade to accentuate the flowing lines of the sculpture, and the light patterns and
designs can be changed on location by a non-programmer without any need to recompile software.
Lucy’s final home is slated to be a very public space in California where she will be a delight for all
to see both day and night. —Caleb Kraft
