Candy Chalk & Edible Chalkboards

Image

This sweet chalk project is a fun way to celebrate the back-to-school season, or it makes a perfect after-school activity and snack all rolled into one. Almost any ice cube tray or mold will work, but an ice stick tray (used to make ice that fits into water bottles) makes more realistic-looking chalk. This recipe makes several sticks of chalk and small chalkboards.

INGREDIENTS

• 6 ounces white candy melts, white chocolate chips, or white melting chocolate

• 12 ounces black fondant

• Powdered sugar

SUPPLIES

• Microwave

• Glass measuring cup

• Ice stick tray (used to make ice for water bottles)

• Rolling pin

• Pizza cutter or sharp knife

DIRECTIONS

1. Place a handful of candy melts into a microwave-safe measuring cup.

2. Microwave the candy at 50 percent power for 1 minute. Stir. Continue to microwave at 30-second intervals, and stir until the candy is melted and smooth. Repeat with the remaining candy. (Melting the candy in small batches ensures that it doesn’t harden before it is poured into the molds.)

3. Pour the melted candy into the ice stick tray. Gently tap the tray on a hard surface several times to smooth out the candy and release any air bubbles. Set aside.

4. While the candy is cooling, knead a handful of fondant until it’s soft.

5. Cover your work surface and rolling pin in powdered sugar, and roll the fondant into a smooth sheet. The powdered sugar keeps the fondant from sticking and makes it look like a real chalkboard. Use a pizza cutter or knife to cut the fondant into a rectangle.

6. Check the candy chalk. When it’s completely cool, gently twist the ice stick tray to remove the hardened candy from the molds.

7. Your candy chalk and edible chalkboard are now ready to use! If the fondant tears when you try to write on it, roll it again and make it thicker or allow it to sit for a longer period of time. The longer the fondant is exposed to air, the harder it becomes. If you’d like to reuse your chalkboard, simply knead the fondant again until it’s soft and the chalk marks are incorporated into the dough. Roll, cut, and you’ve got a fresh chalkboard.

HOW IT WORKS

Although real chalk is mostly calcium carbonate—an ingredient used to make antacids—you don’t want to eat it. The chalk could contain other harmful ingredients, and eaten in large doses, it can cause health problems.
