There are lots of variations of this basic sidewalk chalk paint recipe and many creative ways to use it. Customize it depending on your mood or whatever ingredients and supplies you have on hand. Substitute flour for cornstarch. Pour in some glitter. Try adding extract or essential oils to make it smell nice. Make it thick or thin. Adding a squirt of dishwashing liquid makes cleanup easier, but if you really want to ensure that the paint doesn’t stain, choose a washable watercolor paint. Each batch makes one color of sidewalk chalk paint. It can easily be doubled or tripled.
1. Pour water into a mixing bowl. Add cornstarch and stir until combined.
2. The consistency of the paint can be adjusted by adding more cornstarch to make it thicker or adding more water to make it thinner.
3. Tint the mixture using food coloring or paint. The more you use, the more saturated the color will be. Add soap, if using, and stir to combine.
4. Use a funnel to transfer the mixture to a squirt bottle, and it’s ready to take outdoors and use.
5. If you don’t have squirt bottles, use a paintbrush or roller to apply the paint to a driveway or pavement.
6. You can even fill a squirt gun with the mixture, pour it into a spray bottle, or squirt it from a water shooter!
