Chalky Bath Paint

Image

Although this bath paint contains no chalk, it’s made with baking soda so it has the look and feel of liquid chalk. This is especially true when the bath paint is allowed to dry on the tub surface. Best of all, it’s made with ingredients that are safe for skin and tub surfaces and will leave your bathtub cleaner than it was before! It wipes off easily when wet or dry. Each batch makes one color, so make as many or as few colors as you like.

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup baking soda

• 1 tablespoon water

• 1 tablespoon clear liquid soap

• 3-4 drops liquid food coloring

SUPPLIES

• Small container with lid

• Mixing spoon

• Measuring cup and spoon

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine the baking soda and water in the container. You’ll have a thick paste.

2. Pour in the soap and stir. Depending on the soap you use, you may need to adjust the consistency. Add more water if the paint is too thick; add more baking soda if it’s too thin.

3. Mix in the food coloring.

4. Use sponge brushes, art brushes, or your fingers to apply to the tub or shower surface.

HOW IT WORKS

Soap works because it’s a surfactant. One end of a surfactant molecule attracts water (hydrophilic) and the other is attracted to dirt, grime, and oil (hydrophobic). Hydrophobic ends attach to the oil and hydrophilic ends stick to the water. This causes the oil to be suspended in the water so it can be easily washed away.

5. Keep tightly closed when not in use and your chalky bath paints should last for several bath times, though the paint may need to be mixed again.

6. Get messy while getting clean—mix colors, create a huge work of art, make bubbles, and have fun. Just be careful—the soap can make the tub slippery!
