Frozen Marbles

Image

Got some extra chalk balloons? Put ’em in the freezer and make a batch of frozen marbles. Draw targets on the driveway and play a quick game of marbles, or simply let them melt on the pavement in the hot sun, and watch how their colors mix and blend. The opportunities are endless!

INGREDIENTS

• Water balloons

• Batch of sidewalk chalk paint, any color

SUPPLIES

• Water-balloon pump and filler, large pump bottle, or water shooter

• Sidewalk chalk (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Image

1. Follow steps 1 through 3 from Chalk Bombs, and then place the filled balloons in the freezer until solid.

2. Once frozen, cut the tie off each balloon. Peel off the balloon and discard.

3. It’s likely that some cornstarch has settled to the bottom and your marbles will not be perfectly round. If you’d like them smoother, run them under water until they’re the right shape.

4. There are so many ways to use chalk bombs and frozen marbles. Draw chalk targets and see how close you can land a chalk bomb to the bull’s-eye. Use the frozen marbles to draw or play a giant game of shooters. Have throwing contests or races. Then go inside and make another batch!

HOW IT WORKS

Your frozen marbles will be slightly bigger than the chalk bombs you put in the freezer. This is because water expands as it freezes. Most substances shrink when they freeze, but water expands because of how ice molecules crystallize with more open space.
