Exploding Stomp Chalk
Chalk doesn’t get messier than this! Stomp on airtight bags full of fizzy chalk paint to make them explode. Exploding stomp chalk is quick to put together and appeals to just about everybody. Warning: This is an activity that should be done outdoors wearing play clothes!
DIRECTIONS
1. Fill each snack bag with 1/2 cup of sidewalk chalk paint.
2. Add one antacid tablet to each bag.
3. Seal the bag tightly so it won’t leak. Don’t squeeze the air out of the bag before sealing.
4. Watch as the bag begins to swell. It will continue to grow larger until it looks very full. Put on the safety goggles.
Tip
Exploding chalk bags must be made immediately before use because they don’t store well (for obvious reasons!). Be sure to clean the area when you’re finished and dispose of the used snack bags properly.
5. Once the bag seems like it’s about to pop, use your foot to stomp on it and watch it explode! The longer you wait to stomp on the bag, the better the explosion you’ll get. (Just don’t wait so long that the bag explodes on its own!)
6. If you want to make several bags of exploding stomp chalk in different colors, make a big batch of white chalk paint (just leave out the color). Once you’ve divided the chalk paint into the snack bags, add a drop or two of paint or food coloring to each bag. Seal the bag and give it a shake to mix.
