Chalk Dough

Image

Chalk dough gets its vibrant color from sidewalk chalk and has only three ingredients. This sensory dough feels soft and silky and can be molded into different shapes. Store-bought or homemade chalk works equally well for making the dough.

INGREDIENTS

• 2-4 pieces colored sidewalk chalk

• 8 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 cup baby oil

SUPPLIES

• Quart freezer bag

• Towel

• Hammer (or mallet)

• Measuring cup

• Mixing spoon

• Large mixing bowl

• Potato masher (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Image

1. Place the chalk into the freezer bag and seal. The more pieces of chalk you use, the darker the finished dough will be.

2. Wrap the bag in a towel, and pound it with a hammer until the chalk is crushed into a fine powder. Check periodically to be sure the bag hasn’t broken.

3. Dump the chalk powder into a large bowl. You can use a potato masher to break up any chalk that hasn’t been crushed.

4. Add the flour, and stir to combine.

5. Add the oil. Because it is colorless, baby oil works well, but you can also substitute vegetable oil.

HOW IT WORKS

Chalk is used to color the dough in this recipe because water-based food coloring or paint won’t work. Water and oil don’t mix because their molecular structure is different. Water is made of polar molecules (one end is positively charged and the other is negatively charged), while oil is made of nonpolar molecules.

6. Keep stirring until the oil is incorporated into the flour and chalk. You may need to use your hands or the potato masher to thoroughly mix it.

7. When the chalk dough is finished it will look and feel like damp sand. Head outside to play because it can get very messy! Try making several colors and mixing them together for rainbow chalk dough.
