Gooey Sensory Chalk

Image

Thicker than regular chalk paint, gooey chalk offers the perfect opportunity for sensory play because it can be used to engage multiple senses at the same time, including touch, smell, and sight. Adding sand, glitter, and scent increases the sensory experience even more, and makes this recipe very versatile.

INGREDIENTS

1/4 cup water

• 2 tablespoons cornstarch

• 1 small packet unsweetened drink mix, any flavor

• Additions, such as glitter or play sand (optional)

SUPPLIES

• Measuring cups and spoons

• Mixing bowl and spoon

• Muffin tin (optional)

• Silicone pastry brushes (optional)

DIRECTIONS

Image

1. Add water to a bowl. Stir in cornstarch and mix until smooth. You can adjust the consistency by adding more cornstarch to make it thicker or more water to make it thinner.

2. Add the drink mix a little at a time and stir. Some colors may stain concrete, so be sure to test an inconspicuous area first and add only enough drink mix to get the desired color and smell.

3. Repeat for each color of gooey chalk. A muffin tin works great for keeping colors separate but all in one place.

HOW IT WORKS

Many sources claim we have five senses (sight, smell, sound, taste, and touch), but others say we have many more. These additional senses include thirst and hunger, body awareness, pain, and even detecting the passage of time.

4. Get creative and stir in anything that increases the sensory experience. Play sand, glitter, dried rice or beans, and even ground chalk are good choices.

5. It’s best to play with your gooey chalk outside because it gets messy but looks great on sidewalks. Pastry brushes work well for applying the paint because of their large size.

6. Your hands work even better! Experiment with mixing the colors and scents of the gooey chalk, and have fun making your own combinations.
