Foaming Chalk

Image

Foaming chalk is a fun twist on sidewalk chalk paint. With just a few ingredients and some empty soap containers, you can create mounds of colorful, bubbly chalk. It’s also a great way to recycle hand soap containers. Be sure the soap pump you’re using is designed for foaming hand soap, or the chalk mixture won’t foam properly.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 cup warm water

1/4 cup cornstarch

• Food coloring

• 1 tablespoon liquid hand soap

SUPPLIES

• Empty foaming hand soap containers, one for each color

• Mixing bowl and spoon

• Measuring cups

DIRECTIONS

1. Pour warm water into a bowl. Add cornstarch and stir until smooth.

2. Tint the mixture with food coloring. Add hand soap, and stir gently to avoid making too many bubbles.

3. Pour the mixture into an empty hand soap container.

4. Use the pump to dispense the foaming chalk just as you would soap. Foaming chalk can be made in many different colors. Try neon food coloring or mixing your own shades.

5. As you use the foaming chalk, the cornstarch may settle to the bottom. Give it a gentle shake or turn the container over a few times to reincorporate the cornstarch.

6. It can be used indoors or outdoors (but be warned, it can get messy!). It will lose volume as it dries, but the imprints from the bubbles will be visible in the texture of the dried chalk.

HOW IT WORKS

The earliest soap was made from ashes, water, and oil. Liquid soap wasn’t manufactured until much later, and even more recently, foaming soap, a form of liquid soap, was developed. A foaming soap dispenser has a chamber that mixes the soap with air to form lots of frothy bubbles, which is why it works so well for making foaming chalk.
