Any-Day Chalk Spray

Image

The best thing about chalk spray is that children can use it any time of year, from a snowy winter afternoon to a hot summer day. It can decorate snowmen and ice sculptures just as beautifully as sidewalks and pavement. Using washable paint ensures that mittens, hands, and clothes won’t get stained.

INGREDIENTS

• 2 cups warm water

• 1 teaspoon flour

• 1-2 tablespoons washable paint

SUPPLIES

• Empty spray bottles

• Measuring cups and spoons

• Mixing bowl and spoon

DIRECTIONS

1. Pour 2 cups of warm water into a bowl. Add flour and stir until dissolved. Use a whisk to get rid of any lumps.

2. Mix in 1 to 2 tablespoons of washable paint. Keep adding paint until the desired color is reached. For more vibrant color, add more paint. Bold, bright colors work best for this project.

3. Pour the mixture into an empty spray bottle. For larger spray bottles, you can double the batch.

4. Repeat for each color of spray. Periodically shake the bottle while in use to keep the contents from settling at the bottom. If the nozzle clogs, run it under warm water.

5. You can use Any-Day Chalk Spray just about anywhere. Try decorating a snowman or making colorful snowballs for a snowball fight. No snow? No problem. It also works on pavement and driveways and will dry to a chalky finish in no time. The possibilities are endless!

HOW IT WORKS

Whatever the weather, you can use chalk spray to observe changing states of matter. On a hot summer day, the water in the chalk spray will evaporate quickly and change from a liquid to a vapor. On a cold winter day, the water in the chalk spray might freeze and change from a liquid to a solid. Both of these changes occur because of energy added (like increasing the temperature) or energy taken away (like decreasing the temperature).
