Appendix A. What's on the CD-ROM?

The CD-ROM that accompanies the Dreamweaver CS3 Bible contains the following:

  • Code examples used in the book.

  • Interactive simulations of each Dreamweaver Technique found in the book, created with Adobe Captivate.

  • A vast array of Dreamweaver extensions from the leaders in the Dreamweaver community, designed to make your work more productive. The types of extensions include behaviors, server behaviors, objects, commands, and inspectors.

  • Two bonus chapters for advanced Dreamweaver exploration: "Creating and Using Objects" and "Creating a Behavior."

Using the Accompanying CD-ROM

The CD-ROM included with this book is a hybrid, which means that it contains files that run on more than one computer platform—in this case, both Windows and Macintosh computers.

In the Configuration folder, the file structure replicates the structure that Dreamweaver sets up when it is installed. For example, objects found in the [drive]Program FilesAdobeDreamweaver CS3ConfigurationObjects (/Applications/Adobe Dreamweaver CS3/Configuration/Objects) folder should be in that location for both the CD-ROM and the installed program. One slight variation: In the Additional Extensions folder, you'll find the various behaviors, objects, and so on, filed under the author's name.

System Requirements

Be sure that your computer meets the minimum system requirements listed in this section. If your computer doesn't match up to most of these requirements, you may have a problem using the contents of the CD-ROM.

Macintosh

Adobe recommends the following minimum requirements for running Dreamweaver on a Macintosh:

  • Power PC G4 or G5, Intel-based Macs

  • Mac OS X 10.4.8 or higher

  • 512MB of available RAM

  • 1GB of RAM for running multiple Suite apps simultaneously

  • 1.4GB of available disk space

  • Thousands of colors display capable of 1024 × 768 resolution

  • DVD-ROM drive required

Windows

Adobe recommends the following minimum requirements for running Dreamweaver on a Windows system:

  • Intel Pentium 4 or 5 processor, 2 GHz or equivalent

  • Windows XP SP2 or higher, Vista Home Premium, Business and Ultimate

  • 512MB of available RAM

  • 1GB of RAM for running multiple Suite apps simultaneously

  • 1GB of available disk space

  • Thousands of colors display capable of 1024 × 768 resolution

  • DVD-ROM drive required

Files and Programs on the CD-ROM

Dreamweaver CS3 Bible contains a host of extensions and auxiliary files to assist your exploration of Dreamweaver, as well as your Web page design work in general. The following sections provide a description of the files and programs on the CD-ROM that accompanies this book.

Dreamweaver extensions

Dreamweaver is extremely extensible, and the Dreamweaver community has built some amazing extensions. In the Additional Extensions folders of the CD-ROM, you'll find hundreds of behaviors, server behaviors, objects, commands, inspectors, and more. The extensions are grouped according to author, and within each author's folder, they are organized by function.

Where available, extensions are packaged in an .mxp file, which can easily be installed using the Extension Manager. To run the Extension Manager from Dreamweaver, choose Commands

Dreamweaver extensions

You'll find a ReadMe.htm file in each author's folder, with links to the author's Web site and more information about his or her creations.

Dreamweaver Techniques simulations and files

One special feature of the Dreamweaver CS3 Bible is the Dreamweaver Techniques found in most of the chapters in the book. Each technique contains all the requisite sample HTML files and graphics files, each within its own folder. For most techniques, there is a starting file and a completed file; open the start file to work through the technique and the final file to see how the finished file should look. To start, copy all the files in the Techniques folder of the CD-ROM to your system and establish a Dreamweaver site with that folder as the local site root; the Dreamweaver Technique "Setting Up Your Site" in Chapter 5 describes the steps to accomplish this task.

Accompanying each of the Dreamweaver Techniques is a simulation that guides you interactively through each of the Techniques. These simulations, created by Mark Fletcher with Adobe Captivate, can be viewed through any browser equipped with the Flash Player.

Dreamweaver CS3 Bible code examples

The Examples folder on the CD-ROM provides sample code used in the book. You can easily view the files through Dreamweaver or your browser without transferring the files to your system. If you do wish to transfer the files, copy the entire folder over to your system.

To incorporate the external style sheets in your Web sites, copy files with .css extensions into your local site's root folder. Then follow the instructions in the "Attaching an External Style Sheet" section found in Chapter 7.

Web resource directory

The World Wide Web is a vital resource for any Web designer, whether a seasoned professional or a beginner. The CD-ROM contains an HTML page with a series of links to resources on the Web. These are links to general resources as well as to Dreamweaver-specific references.

Bonus chapters

Dreamweaver is a wonderfully deep program—just when you thought you've mastered it all, there's still more to learn. Unlike many software programs, Dreamweaver is fully extensible and can be customized to an amazing degree. The two bonus chapters show you how to extend two of the most commonly used elements in Dreamweaver: objects and behaviors. In "Creating and Using Objects," you learn to build page elements you can drag and drop from Dreamweaver's own Insert bar, from the simple to the robust. "Creating Behaviors" shows you how to add custom JavaScript interactivity to your Web sites through your own behaviors.

Troubleshooting

If you have difficulty installing or using any of the materials on the companion CD-ROM, try the following solutions:

  • Turn off any anti-virus software that you may have running. Installers sometimes mimic virus activity and can make your computer incorrectly believe that it is being infected by a virus. (Be sure to turn the anti-virus software back on later.)

  • Close all running programs. The more programs you're running, the less memory is available to other programs. Installers also typically update files and programs; if you keep other programs running, installation may not work properly.

  • Reference the ReadMe.txt: Please refer to the ReadMe file located at the root of the CD-ROM for the latest product information at the time of publication.
