Labeling and Tagging Your Photos

Most photo file formats allow you to store extra data, called metadata, in the photo file. The camera often stores information such as the date the photo was taken, the camera model, the resolution, and so on. You can add other information: tags to classify the subject matter, captions to add more information about the photo, and your rating of the photo. You can then use these tags and ratings to find or sort your photos.

Add a Tag

  1. If it isn’t already running, start Windows Photo Gallery from the Start menu. If the Info pane isn’t shown, click the Info button to display it.

  2. Use the categories or folders to show the photos to which you want to add tags.

  3. Click a photo to select it. Hold down the Ctrl key and keep clicking additional photos until you’ve selected all the photos to which you want to add the same tag.

  4. Click Add Tags, and do either of the following:

    1. Click a tag in the list.

    2. Type a new tag, and press Enter.

  5. Repeat step 4 to add more tags to the selected photos, or repeat steps 2 through 4 to add tags to other photos.

Add a tag, a caption, and a rating for a photo. From the Start menu, open the folder (the Pictures folder, for example) that contains the picture file, and select the file. Note that for most types of photos and pictures (except bitmap files), the information you added about the file is shown in the Details pane, and that you can edit this information or add new information.
