Using Your RSS Feeds

After the RSS feeds have been added, you can begin to use them to access the information provided in the feed. To get to the RSS-provided information, click the Folder icon at the bottom of the Navigation Pane, and then scroll down to the RSS Feeds folder. The sites that you have configured to get RSS feeds from will appear under the RSS Feeds folder, as shown in Figure 16-6, and will display the title of the feed and the number of unread articles in parentheses following the title.

Selecting a particular RSS feed displays a list of downloaded articles from that site.

Selecting the specific RSS feed that you are interested in will display the list of articles. Selecting a specific article will display the summary of the article in the Reading Pane with links to the complete article. You can either click the InfoBar at the top of the article that states "Click here to view the full article in your default Web browser or to download the article and any enclosures" or click the View Article link at the bottom of the summary in the Reading Pane. Clicking the InfoBar displays a shortcut menu offering two options:

  • View Full Article. Choosing View Full Article loads the entire article in the default browser (commonly Internet Explorer).

  • Download/Update All Content. The Download/Update All Content option contacts the source of the RSS feed and downloads the content and any associated enclosures (such as images). Once downloaded, the display in the Reading Pane changes, showing new information under the InfoBar with a Message tab, a Full Article.htm tab showing the size of the article, as shown in Figure 16-7, and a tab that displays associated pictures (if any).

Choosing the Download/Update All Content option links to an article summary and full article content.

Selecting the Full Article.htm tab activates the preview for the article and displays a warning about previewing files only from trusted sources, as shown in Figure 16-8. The Full Article.htm preview warning provides a Preview File button to load the file and a check box allowing you to enable or disable the warning.

After viewing the warning, click the Preview File button to load the article in the Reading Pane.

When loading an article in the Reading Pane, Outlook 2007 will block images and links, preventing the activation of content during the preview, as shown in Figure 16-9. If you know that the site is trustworthy and that the article is safe, you can open the article in your browser (by choosing the View Full Article option on the InfoBar shortcut menu in the initial Reading Pane display of the article summary).

When you preview the article in the Reading Pane, the InfoBar displays a message about blocking images and links.

Viewing the article provided in the RSS feed by opening the message presents additional options, as shown in Figure 16-10. You can forward the article to others or even share the specific RSS feed with other people (sending them the RSS feed URL) by clicking Share This Feed in the Respond group. Clicking Download Content in the Options group gives you the option to update the article content—Outlook 2007 contacts the source of the RSS feed and obtains an updated version of the article. Clicking Other Actions lets you save attachments, forward the article as an attachment, change the encoding format, toggle the message header, view the source, view the article in the browser, and set the zoom (magnification) level. In addition to these RSS-specific options are common message options, such as Categorize, Follow Up, and Mark As Unread, as well as Find, Related, and Select options.

Options to forward and share the article are available when viewing an RSS article.
