Creating a scatter plot

The scatter plot allows us to find a correlation, grouping, or outlier by plotting bubbles for each dimension item. This is done by using two measures: one for the y axis, and the other for the x axis. We can also add a third measure to set the size of the bubble, and a fourth measure to set a color. See the example that's shown in the following screenshot:

This example shows each product as a dot, and the Category defines the color of each dot. We can find some outliers: one for Beverages in the Sales $ axis, and another for Meat/Poultry in the Avg Discount % axis. We can also find a concentration of sales up to 50k on sales, and up to 12% of average discount.

To create the scatter plot chart, do the following:

  1. Click on the Charts button on the asset panel, which is on the left-hand side of the screen, and find the Scatter plot.
  2. Click on Scatter plot and drag and drop it onto the empty space on the right-hand side of the sheet.
  3. Click on Add Dimension and select Product in the Dimensions section.
  4. Click on Add Measure and select Sales $ in the Measures section.
  5. Click on Add Measure and select Avg Discount % in the Measures section.
  6. The chart will look like this:

  1. Click on the Master items button on the asset panel, which is on the left-hand side of the screen.
  2. Find the Category dimension.
  3. Drag and drop the Category on top of the scatter plot.
  4. Select Color by: Category in the context menu.
  5. Set the Title of the chart to Products by Avg Discount $ x Sales $.

The sheet will look like this:

In the next section, you will learn how to create a reporting sheet to show some detailed information about the data.
