Engaging On-Demand App Generation

On-demand App Generation (ODAG) is one technique that Qlik Sense Enterprise platforms have to create fresh new apps on-demand based on user selections. This feature is used mainly in situations where the size of your data is much bigger than your Qlik Sense Enterprise server's RAM memory.

Using the ODAG feature enables users to analyze billions of records without retrieving the whole dataset into memory. The idea behind this concept is that it is not necessary (or sometimes not even possible) to load all detailed data inside your Qlik Sense box RAM memory. We may simply summarize a sample of our data that leverages users to analyze business metrics. If a detailed version is needed, Qlik Sense will generate a fresh new application with that data.

In this chapter, we will learn how to create a summarized application, which is a regular Qlik Sense app where the fact table is aggregated. This application is capable of analyzing a database that contains the data of a million bike trips without sacrificing too much RAM. By integrating a template, we leverage the capability to dig into detailed information. When the user needs to see the detailed Qlik Sense data, we will use the template to generate another application with the detailed data that the user has requested.

The following topics will be covered in this chapter:

  • How Qlik Sense handles large data volumes
  • Setting up Google BigQuery Account
  • Configuring Qlik Sense for ODAG applications
  • Building a summarized application
  • Building a detailed application
  • Integrating the summarized and detailed applications
