Creating visualizations using chart suggestions

Qlik Sense provides a wide range of visualizations, such as charts, tables, and maps. Selecting one of them could be a challenge, especially if the user is now using a data visualization tool. With the assistance of the cognitive engine, Qlik Sense suggests a visualization when we add a field to the sheet. Adding new fields in the visualization, changes it to show the best visualization for the selected dimensions and measures.

The following example will show us how to work with the chart suggestions:

  1. Click on the Insight button to close it and go to the sheet. The sheet will look as follows:

  1. Use the Edit button to enter the edit mode on the sheet. Reduce the height of the bar chart on the right to add space for a new chart. Use the handlers at the border to change the size, and match the chart with the same height as the bar chart on the left, as demonstrated in the following screenshot:

  1. Now, click on the Fields button on the asset panel, which is on the left-hand side of the screen and search for the SalesAmount field. We can go through the entire list until we find this or type the name of field into the search box, as follows:

  1. Click on the SalesAmount field and drag and drop it into the empty space on the sheet, as demonstrated in the following screenshot:

  1. Qlik Sense creates a new visualization of the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) type because we have selected a field with numeric data, as follows:

Note that the Chart suggestions option lies at the top-right corner of the property panel.
  1. Next, go to the field list on the right, clear the search box, and move the Country field, laying it on top of the new chart, as follows:

  1. The chart suggestion then detects that the Country field provides location information, and this can be shown as a map as follows:

  1. It is observed that the new chart is the same as the previous chart generated by the Insight Advisor. So, we already have a map with the same information. The question here is: can we show this information with a different chart? The answer to this is yes, and the Chart suggestions feature also allows us to view other recommendations. Click on the button highlighted in the following screenshot to open the recommendation panel:

  1. The chart recommendation panel depicts several charts available for the selected fields, as follows:

  1. Click on the bar chart to change the visualization in the sheet, as follows:

  1. To add a title to the chart, we can click on the title placeholder inside the chart and type Sales by Country. We can also open the general section panel and set the Title, Subtitle, and Footnote buttons for the chart, as follows:

  1. When we create a chart with a chart suggestion, we have limited options for customization. To fully customize any chart, we need to switch off the Chart suggestions button. Once this is done, the full property panel is available for chart customization of Data (dimensions and measures), Sorting, Add-ons, and Appearance, as follows:
