We close our book with a builder improvement section. First, on the next pages, you will see a summary set of profiles of each Builder Type along with their respective gifts and gaps for comparison. Then, in chapter 9, we offer two strategies to enhance your own craft as a builder.

The expert builder strategy is based on the elevate-and-delegate insights we shared in each Builder Personality chapter (chapters 2 through 5). It suggests you focus on honing your notable gifts, and delegate other important tasks to others. It’s like a naturally gifted butterfly swimmer concentrating on that event, improving his or her stroke mechanics, rather than trying to develop flip turns for the breaststroke.

The master builder strategy, on the other hand, invites you to explore what lies beneath and beyond your natural strengths and style preferences, and examine why you do what you do. This takes real courage but, in turn, can allow you to borrow some of the techniques and approaches from what we call your polar complement. This is the Builder Type whose core strength may be your greatest deficit. With this strategy, you don’t become someone else, but rather adopt and adapt your complement’s strengths in a manner that makes them your own.

Whichever growth strategy you choose—expert or master—depends on your willingness to expose yourself . . . to yourself. Entrepreneurship is itself an exercise in personal exposure—to the public, the market, and one’s colleagues, family, and friends. As a builder, you know how that feels. Regardless of your strategy, you will be on your way to becoming a stronger builder.
