Sraffa and Modern Economics, Volume I

This book contains a representative sample of work that has emanated from Piero Sraffa’s two seminal contributions to economic analysis: the reconstruction of the core of the classical approach to value and distribution and the foundations of a critique of the neoclassical system on the basis of the latter’s treatment of capital. The papers here published cover an ample spectrum of issues, both of a purely theoretical nature and of a more applied character.

The structure of the book, the first of two volumes, reflects the attempt to account for the state of research and debate around the main themes that were directly addressed in Sraffa’s work or have been stimulated by it. This volume is devoted to the two core aspects of the profound revision of economic theory carried out by Sraffa, namely the critique of the basic principles of neoclassical theory and the reconstruction of the theoretical approach of the classical economists.

The two volumes in this collection explore Sraffa’s legacy and the relevance of his thought for modern economics. Written by an array of internationally respected contributors, including Garegnani, Schefold, Aspromourgos and Hollander, it is an invaluable tool for all those interested in economic analysis and the history of economic thought.
