What’s in This Chapter
• Twenty-three activities for use in the workshop sessions
• Complete step-by-step instructions for conducting the activities
To help you facilitate adult learning, we have designed learning activities to deploy regularly throughout the workshop. Their purpose is to challenge and engage participants by providing stimulation for different types of learners and helping them acquire new knowledge. Many of the activities in this workshop are experiential in nature—that is, participants experience something that helps them uncover the learning. Participants will go beyond the “what” they learned to discuss the “so what” and “now what.” In some cases the activities will showcase the participants and draw upon their experiences and expertise to share with the rest of the group.
Each learning activity provides detailed information about learning objectives, materials required, time frame, step-by-step instructions, variations, and debriefing questions, if required. Follow the instructions in each activity to prepare your workshop agenda, identify and gather materials needed, and successfully guide learners through the activity. The experiences provided by the learning activities help support the topics covered in the workshop.
Please note that the three workshop agendas in this book use many of the same learning activities but because of the differences in workshop length, the times for the individual learning activities may vary from agenda to agenda. Suggested facilitation times are noted on the learning activities as well as in the agendas in Chapters 1–3.
