Version Checking

As MDAC is enhanced, you will probably need to periodically update your MDAC components. Monitor http://www.microsoft.com/data/ for the latest MDAC version. Problems related to incorrect versioning are usually very clear. For example, when I was administering a shared server running Internet Information Server 4, one of the Web developers decided to upgrade his Access database file to Access 2000.

SQL Server Internet Licensing

If you choose to offer and manage a Microsoft SQL Server, verify that you have an adequate number of licenses to support your customer base. SQL Server ships with 10 Client Access Licenses (CALs), which means that no more than 10 Web clients can be connected to the SQL Server at the same time. Individual CALs are very expensive, so if you expect a lot of connections, look into the SQL Server Internet Connector License, which provides for an unlimited number of simultaneous connections to an SQL Server from Web clients.

So, he simply copied the new Access 2000 database file over his existing Access 97 database file. Suddenly, his database stopped working. To correct the problem, he could have copied his old database file back to the server, or I could have installed the latest ODBC interface to the Web server—which I did.

At the time of this writing, the current shipping version of MDAC is 2.1.2.4203.3. Although it's a bit complicated to check the version of MDAC under Windows NT 4, it is pleasantly simple with Windows 2000. To determine whether your Web server contains the most recent updates, click the Windows Update option on the Start menu. This is invaluable information for an Internet Information Services administrator.
