3 Brushes & Painting

Many tools in Photoshop use brushes. With some, we paint in an expected and intuitive way, adding color to our digital canvas. With other tools, we find ourselves “painting” with imagery, past versions of our documents, or image adjustments. Almost every mask we make requires at least a little touch-up—by painting.

That’s why dabblers, designers, and photographers—not just painters and illustrators—need to understand how painting works in Photoshop, and how to configure the brushes we use to do so.
