Specifies the directory in which debugging trace files for the background processes (LGWR, DBWR, and so on) are written. The ALERT file logs significant database events and messages in plain text format. The form taken by its filename depends on your operating system, but for platforms supporting multiple instances, it is ALERT_sid.LOG. Although the ALERT file grows slowly, there is no limit on this file, so you might want to delete it regularly—which can be done even when the database is running.
