Data transfer

There is no doubt that the data-transfer step is the most time-consuming part of the migration. Usually, the data to be transferred are the messages, calendar events, and contacts. This asynchronous processing is performed in the Google Cloud using mechanisms similar to batches.

Below, we describe in more detail the tools offered by Google for these tasks. We shall stick to the two most common source platforms, namely Microsoft Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes.

Data transfer checklist

Once account creation is complete and the global configuration of the Apps is finished, the data transfer remains. It can be roughly characterized along three axes, which we will look at now.

The choice of data to migrate:

  • The mail on a server and the local user archives
  • The user contacts and the enterprise directories
  • The calendars and the events they contain

The platforms to migrate, most of the market being shared between:

  • Microsoft Exchange
  • IBM Lotus Notes

The actor who will launch the migration:

  • An administrator with access to the mail server
  • Users performing the migration themselves using desktop tools
