DSPs are quite a recent development. Their power and computing capacity makes them very similar to microprocessors in the following ways:

• They are used to manage external and analog data.
• They are equipped with powerful ALUs and a set of ADCs.
• Generally speaking, they implement a small part of more complex systems. They act as interfaces for the output of these systems. 
• They are used in digital controls.
