Sensemaking to Inspire Strategy

Part 1 made the case for foresight, forecasting, and leadership vision. Part 2 is an exploration of how leaders can extract insight from foresight, as input to strategy. Foresight is everywhere, but insight is rare.

Stories help leaders make sense out of the VUCA world. Immersion experiences provide practice grounds for learning to live with dilemmas. Workshops are an important way to make the link between foresight and insight, to use group creativity to coax out insight that is robust and practical. Insight is a necessary prerequisite for a winning strategy, and that insight must also be expressed with clarity if it is to have the greatest impact.

Foresight is inherently provocative, but leaders must draw lessons from the provocation if they are to create a clear, compelling, and productive way forward. How do leaders gain insight and inspire it in others? Part 2 explores the foresight to insight zone of the Foresight to Insight to Action Cycle. (See Figure 5.1.)
