Acknowledgments

This book wouldn’t be possible without the work of multiple people from multiple organizations dedicated to CMMI-based process improvement. The complete CMMI-ACQ model is contained in the book, which was created by the CMMI Product Team. The tips and hints we added were based on those created by the work of Mary Beth Chrissis, Mike Konrad, and Sandy Shrum in the book CMMI®: Guidelines for Process Integration and Product Improvement.

The CMMI-ACQ model development team included members from different organizations and backgrounds. Ultimately, without the work of those involved in the CMMI project since it began in 1998, this book would not exist.

The General Motors team created the report on which the CMMI-ACQ model was based. That team consisted of the following members: Kathryn Dodson, Matt Fisher, Hubert F. Hofmann, Keith Kost, Gowri S. Ramani, and Deborah K. Yedlin.

The CMMI-ACQ development team developed what is now CMMI-ACQ, V1.2, from that report and inputs from lots of users and reviewers. That team consisted of the following members: Lloyd Anderson, Larry Baker, Roger Bate, Rhonda Brown, Aaron Clouse, Brad Doohan, Tom Keuten, Mike Konrad, Keith Kost, Mahav S. Panwar, Mike Phillips, Margaret Porteus, George Prosnik, Karen Richter, John Scibilia, Sandy Shrum, and Deborah K. Yedlin.

We would also like to acknowledge those who directly contributed to this book.

We want to thank Bill Peterson for his support and for his leadership of the Software Engineering Process Management Program (which includes CMMI) at the SEI.

We have special thanks for the contributors to Chapters 6 and 7. All of these authors were willing to share their insights and experiences and met aggressive deadlines to do so. These contributors were Andrew D. Boyd, Richard Freeman, Richard Frost, Tom Keuten, and Craig Meyers. We are delighted that they agreed to contribute their experiences to our book.

We are grateful to the reviewers of this book, Lloyd Anderson and Richard Barbour. Their useful comments helped us to improve the book and to better convey our ideas.

Special thanks go to Addison-Wesley Publishing Partner, Peter Gordon, for his assistance, experience, and advice. We’d also like to thank Kim Boedigheimer, Julie Nahil, Audrey Doyle, and Dmitri Korzh for their help with the design, editing, and final production of this book.

From Brian P. Gallagher

I would like to thank my wife, Valerie, and my daughters, Ashley, Caitlin, and Rachel, for their patience, understanding, and support. I would like to dedicate my contribution to this book to the memory of our son, Brian. Only 24 years with us—not a day goes by without you in our thoughts, prayers, and hearts.

From Mike Phillips

I would like to thank my wife, Connie, for her understanding and acknowledging the time to help create this book with a great team. I owe my CMMI perspectives to Drs. Roger Bate and Mike Konrad—and my acquisition perspectives to leaders in the Air Force, such as Generals Ron Yates, Dick Scofield, Ralph Tourino, and Keith Glenn. I hope this book pays dividends on all of their investments in time and energy.

From Karen J. Richter

I would like to thank my sponsors from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics (OUSD [AT&L]), Mr. Mark Schaeffer and Ms. Kristen Baldwin, for their unwavering and continued support for my CMMI work over the past ten years. At the Institute for Defense Analyses (IDA), I would like to thank the Vice President for Finances, Ms. Ruth Greenstein, and my Division Director, Mr. Mike Leonard, for their support to coauthor this book.

From Sandy Shrum

I would like to thank my coauthors, Karen, Mike, and Brian. It has been a joy and a privilege to work with all three of them on this book and through the years. I’d also like to thank the colleagues I’ve worked with on CMMI development and support projects over the past ten years. I’ve learned a lot and have had lots of fun doing it. My work with them has given me opportunities I would not have otherwise experienced. Finally, I’d like to thank my boyfriend, Jimmy, for his loving support and for helping me keep my focus and sense of humor through all the hours of work required to coauthor this book.
