App-Driven Approach

We use an app-driven approach—new features are discussed in the context of complete working Android apps, with one app per chapter. For each app, we first describe it, then have you test-drive it. Next, we briefly overview the key Eclipse IDE (integrated development environment), Java and Android SDK (Software Development Kit) technologies we use to implement the app. For apps that require it, we walk through designing the GUI visually using Eclipse. Then we provide the complete source-code listing, using line numbers, syntax shading and code highlighting to emphasize the key portions of the code. We also show one or more screen shots of the running app. Then we do a detailed code walkthrough, emphasizing the new programming concepts introduced in the app. You can download the source code for all of the book’s apps from http://www.deitel.com/books/AndroidHTP2/.

For each chapter, we also provide Android Studio IDE versions of any Eclipse-specific instructions. Because Android Studio is an early access version and will be evolving rapidly, we provide the Android Studio instructions on the book’s website

This will enable us to keep the instructions up to date.
