About the Authors

Dr. Arthur M. Langer is the Academic Director of the Executive Master of Science in Technology Management at Columbia University. He also serves on multiple faculties at Columbia University including the Graduate School of Business, the Department of Organization and Leadership at the Graduate School of Education (Teachers College), and the School of Continuing Education. Dr. Langer's practice and research involves technology leadership, workforce development, adult mentoring programs, workplace learning, adult education, intellectual development, and transformative learning. Dr. Langer is also the Chairman and Founder of Workforce Opportunity Services (www.wforce.org), a nonprofit social venture that provides scholarships and careers to underserved populations around the world. Dr. Langer is the author of Guide to Software Development: Designing and Managing the Life Cycle (2012), Information Technology and Organizational Learning (2011), Analysis and Design of Information Systems (2007), Applied Ecommerce (2002), and The Art of Analysis (1997) and has numerous published articles and papers relating to service learning for underserved populations, IT organizational integration, mentoring, and staff development. Dr. Langer consults with corporations and universities on information technology, staff development, management transformation, and curriculum development around the globe.

Dr. Lyle Yorks is Associate Professor in the Department of Organization and Leadership, Teachers College, Columbia University, where he teaches courses in strategy development as a learning process, strategic human resource development, and research. He is also a lecturer in the Executive Master of Science Program in Technology Management at the School of Continuing Education, Columbia University, where he teaches a course in strategic advocacy. Dr. Yorks has over 30 years' experience working with organizations in diverse industries worldwide on projects involving training designs, strategic organizational change, and management development. Earlier in his career, Dr. Yorks was a senior vice president of Drake Beam Morin, a human resources consulting firm; a principal and consultant to the firm of Marshall-Qualtec, a consulting firm working in the area of organization restructuring and strategic change; and an internal consultant on the staff of the Corporate Systems and Methods Department, Travelers Insurance Companies. Dr. Yorks has also served as visiting faculty in various EMBA and executive education programs. Articles authored and coauthored by Dr. Yorks have appeared in the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Education and Learning, California Management Review, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Sloan Management Review, and other scholarly and professional journals. His 2004 article “Toward a Political Economy Model for Comparative Analysis of the Role of Strategic Human Resource Development Leadership” in Human Resource Development Review received the Outstanding Article award. Dr. Yorks earned master degrees from Vanderbilt University and Columbia University and his doctorate from Columbia University.
