resolv.conf File

Good. The zone files are installed on the master server. Now we need to add the /etc/resolv.conf file; ours is shown below:

antimony# cat /etc/resolv.conf
;
; resolv.conf that queries the
; master name server first, followed
; by the slave name server
;
search solarisbootcamp.com
nameserver 192.168.44.51
nameserver 192.168.44.52
antimony#

This file has a number of options that can be included, but again, we'll only use the most common entries. The “search” value contains the list of domains to be searched, and essentially will be appended to any host name that doesn't include a trailing dot.

We are allowed up to three name server entries in the file. They are queried in the order listed, so we've added our master and slave entries to it. ISPs often provide a name server that can also be used, in which case we can add that one as the third entry if required.

Once the file has been generated, it can be copied across all the machines that will be using DNS (both servers and clients).
