Facilitate (create)

  • Head: At this stage, your role is to foster and release the creative spirit that lies within all people and organizations. To this end you must be able to think divergently and help others to open their minds to new ideas and ways of thinking. Most importantly, as a facilitator, you must be able to operate on many levels at any one time. Although you must be aware of the task in hand, you must also be tuned into the process being followed by the group and be aware of any emotional blockages.

  • Heart: To be able to help others create, you must really understand how others feel. Creativity is about taking risks of a financial, organizational and personal kind. Just think about the ridicule that people often face when they offer radical ideas or solutions. As such you must personally understand and empathize with the pain that other people might be going through when they are trying to build a solution. The key is to understand the extent to which you are personally comfortable with risk. If you are not afraid of taking risks in life, then there is a danger that your free spirit might push people too far in a creative situation. However, if you are risk-averse by nature, then your natural hesitancy might result in the client and consumer failing to originate anything really new.

  • Hands: Your role here is to support those people who are naturally creative and encourage and protect the more hesitant. Your most valuable weapon in this process is language. You must ensure that anything you say cannot be misconstrued and is not seen as a limiting factor. Avoid making judgements; use "I" rather than "we"; use "could" rather than "must"; and don't impose your beliefs on the group. Ultimately you must ensure that you say what you mean, and mean what you say.
