FRRouting

The FRRouting (FRR) package, available for pfSense since late 2017, supports BGP, OSPF, and OSPF6. It is intended as a replacement for both OpenBGPD and Quagga OSPF, and allows pfSense users to run both BGPD and OSPF simultaneously. It can be configured both from the web GUI and from the command line.

If you install FRR, pfSense will automatically uninstall OpenBGPD and Quagga OSPF, if either of these packages are already installed. Once FRR is installed, there will be four new options on the Services menu: FRR BGP, FRR Global/Zebra, FRR OSPF, and FRR OSPF6. The different menu options can also be accessed by clicking on the identically marked tabs on the pages for each option. For example, to access FRR Global/Zebra from FRR BGP, you can navigate to Services | FRR Global/Zebra or click on the [Global] tab. To navigate back to FRR BGP from FRR Global/Zebra, either navigate to Services | FRR BGP or click on the [BGP] tab.

FRRouting contains many of the functions of OpenBGPD and Quagga OSPF. It supports the same protocols, and allows you to edit the config files of each of the daemons. It also has some features not previously available. For example, the FRR BGP configuration page has a section called Network Distribution, which among other things, allows you to redistribute OSPF routes to BGP neighbors. There are also many advanced options, such as Best Path Selection. The OSPF options are similar to those found in Quagga OSPF. The Global Settings, however, support both access lists and prefix lists, which allow you to allow or deny certain networks or parts of networks in specific contexts used by the routing daemons. You can also view the status of each daemon on a separate page. FRRouting is an ideal choice if you anticipate running both BGP and OSPF at the same time.
