Introduction for Children

Dear Children,

Food is sacred. This is why we so enjoy preparing it and sharing it. Without it we could not live.

It is a magic ceremony by which the four elements water, earth, fire, and air are transformed into health, strength, love, and light.

In Spanish hogar means not only a family house but also the hearth, where the fire is. It defines the physical and spiritual center of a house: the heart of life. Since we were little we were in the kitchen with our family helping, learning, communicating and sharing experiences around a table.

Spain is a small country in southern Europe, but rich in culinary experiences with incredibly generous and hospitable people. This is why since the distant past we have developed ingenious ways to share food. Tapas (small bites), pinchos (skewered bites) and raciones (a bigger portion to be shared between a few) are our way of eating as they encourage human relations and friendship.

Among the habits my parents taught me when I was young two stand out: First is to bless the food and the people and give thanks. The second is to wash your hands before eating and arrive at the table clean and tidy. It is a sign of respect and love for ourselves and for others.

So, now go wash your hands!
