About the Author

Jim Euchner is a customer-centered technology executive with more than 25 years of experience leading innovation, strategy, advanced IT, and R&D in Fortune 500 companies. He has a track record of delivering top-line and bottom-line growth through radical process innovation, new product introduction, and the launch of new businesses. His experience includes senior leadership positions in the automotive, manufacturing, telecommunications, and oil and gas industries.

Most recently, Jim was Vice President of Global Innovation at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, where he led the development of new businesses and incubated and launched four businesses on three continents. Prior to his work at Goodyear, Jim held positions as Vice President of Growth Strategy and Innovation at Pitney Bowes, Inc. and as Vice President, Network Systems Advanced Technology at Bell Atlantic (now Verizon).

Jim is an established expert in driving growth inside large enterprises. He was a pioneer in the use of anthropology and design methods inside companies and has developed effective practices for the use of Lean Startup techniques in the corporate context. Throughout his career, Jim has focused on the practical use of emerging technologies, including expert systems, machine learning, cloud-based predictive analytics, operations research, and the Internet of Things. He has published over 100 papers, interviews, and columns. Two of his papers were included in Innovative Applications of Artificial Intelligence, and one was a finalist for the prestigious Edelman Award for achievement in operations research. He holds 13 U.S. patents, including 1 that combines neural network technology with knowledge-based approaches to character recognition.

Jim is Editor in Chief of Research-Technology Management, a peer-reviewed journal for practitioners of innovation, technology, and research management. He is also Visiting Professor at Aston Business School (UK), where he is helping manufacturing firms move from product-centric to services-led business models. Jim is particularly interested in business model innovation and the effective use of Lean Startup approaches in large organizations.

Jim is industry Co-Chair of the Aston University Advanced Services Partnership and was a member of the Scientific Advisory Council for the Nissan autonomous vehicle program. He is also Co-Founder of the MIT Innovation Laboratory, a consortium to nurture innovation in organizations. Jim has published and spoken extensively on innovation and technology management.

Jim received his Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in mechanical and aerospace engineering and his Master of Science degree from Princeton University, where he was a Guggenheim Fellow. He also holds an MBA from Southern Methodist University.
