An example schedule entry

To illustrate the process of creating a schedule and using it in a rule, we will create a schedule for lunchtime (Noon – 1 P.M.) and create a rule using this schedule. This will allow us to implement a rule which allows access to Recode only during Noon to 1 P.M. on weekdays. To do this, we perform the following steps:

  1. Navigate to Firewall | Schedules, and click on the Add button at the bottom of the page.
  1. Set Schedule Name to LUNCH_TIME and add a brief description.
  1. On the calendar, select Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, and Fri by clicking on the top of each column.
  2. Set the time range in the Time fields to begin at 12:00 and end at 13:00. Enter a brief description (for example, Lunchtime), and click on the Add Time button. Then click on the Save button at the bottom of the page.
  1. Now that the schedule has been added, we can navigate to Firewall | Rules and add a rule that utilizes it. We can use the previously created Block Recode rule as a template for the new rule, but instead of blocking access to Recode, we will allow access – but only during lunch hour. Click on the Copy icon in the row containing the rule for blocking Recode.
  2. Change the Action for the new rule to Pass. Add an appropriate Description (for example, Allow Recode during lunchtime).
  3. Click on the Display Advanced button at the bottom of the page and scroll down the page to the Schedule drop-down box. Select LUNCH_TIME in this box.
  4.  To configure scheduling options, we need to click on the Advanced options button. Once we do, the advanced options will appear on the page, and we can scroll down to the Schedule drop-down box. In this box, we can now select the LUNCH_TIME schedule we just created. Then click on the Save button at the bottom of the page. Our new rule is now created.
  5. On the DEVELOPERS tab, you may notice that the new rule is lower in the table than the Block Recode rule. Thus, any traffic to Recode will be matched by the block rule first and the new allow rule will never be invoked. To change this, drag the new rule above the Block Recode rule. Click on the Save button at the bottom of the page to save the changes.
  6. We still need to apply the rule changes, so click on the Apply Changes button at the top of the page.

We now have a rule to allow access to Recode during lunchtime, and it should work. Note that if you hover your mouse over LUNCH_TIME in the table, a pop-up window will appear with a description of the rule.
