This workbook addresses the issues of Managing Performance. Should you wish to extend your study to other Super Series workbooks covering related or different subject areas, you will find a comprehensive list at the back of this book.
This workbook relates to the learning outcomes of Unit M3.26 Managing Performance from the ILM Level 3 Award, Certificate and Diploma in First Line Management.
This workbook relates to the following Units of the Management Standards which are used in S/NVQs in Management, as well as a range of other S/NVQs:
Unit D6:Allocate and monitor the progress and quality of work in your area of responsibility.
As a first line manager, you may be expected to meet budgetary targets, expressed in financial terms. But very detailed ‘performance’ targets are often much more practical, such as ‘serve 20 customers per hour’, or ‘inspect five junction boxes per day’.This workbook is intended to help you understand how to meet performance targets, and agree targets that are realistic.
When you have completed this workbook you will be better able to:
identify ways of measuring performance levels;
describe a range of methods for measuring performance;
identify the differing objectives of stakeholders in the organization;
identify and agree performance objectives with the members of your work team;
select the ideal performance measure;
monitor performance against agreed targets;
make recommendations for improvement in performance, or adjustments to more realistic targets.
The following Activities require some planning so you may want to look at these now.
Activity 25 – where you use the balanced scorecard to suggest improvement.
Activity 29 – in which you gather information for measuring performance.
Activity 35 – which analyses the systems used, in order to improve work activities and control resources.
Some or all of these Activities may provide the basis of evidence for your S/NVQ portfolio. All portfolio activities and the Work-based assignment are sign posted with this icon. |
The icon states the unit to which the portfolio activities and Work-based assignment relate.
The Work-based assignment, on page 104 suggests that you speak to your manager, finance director or to your colleagues in the accounts office about the way in which budgets are used in your organization. You might like to start thinking now about who to approach and arrange to speak with them.
