This chapter describes the role of the management server in the Sun Cluster 3.0 system. Unlike previous versions of the Sun Cluster software, the Sun Cluster 3.0 software does not require an administration workstation. However, to provide easy installation and management of Sun servers, the system needs a number of basic infrastructure services. This chapter describes the infrastructure services that a Sun management server provides to support the Sun Cluster 3.0 environment.
For a single cluster or a small group of servers, many of these services can be incorporated onto a single, small server such as the Netra™ T1 AC200. The SunTone™ Cluster Platforms portfolio includes such a server to provide rapid cluster installation and management. Larger sites or multiple clusters may require larger or multiple management systems. You can use the design of the management server for the SunTone Platforms portfolio as a guide to build your own management server, or you can use existing infrastructure services.
Note
The SunToneSM program provides customers with a thorough evaluation of their business operations and information technology (IT) infrastructure, thereby helping to improve their quality of service and reliability. Currently, the SunTone Certification and Branding program has more than 1,400 applicants for certification—including service providers, independent software vendors (ISVs), and integrators—and provides more than 90 SunTone Certified Solutions. The SunTone Platforms portfolio is a new addition to the program, providing application-ready hardware and software stacks to help improve IT infrastructure deployment time and reliability. Summary
These topics explain how the management server provides the infrastructure services you need to install and manage the cluster servers.
A number of ISVs provide software products that complement the Sun products described here. These products are not discussed here, but many provide valuable services for Sun customers.
