Introduction

Welcome to CompTIA® Project+® Practice Tests: Exam PK0-005 Second Edition. Project management remains a fast-growing field that seems to be in constant need of dependable, certified talent. Project managers are needed in just about every field, including, but not limited to, construction, engineering, government and civil initiatives, nonprofits, information technology, logistics, and transportation. Moreover, it can be mighty handy for those projects in your life, including moving, putting in a new kitchen, or helping to organize an event for your local parent-teacher organization. Heck, it was even surprisingly helpful in writing a book of practice questions for the CompTIA Project+ exam.

The Computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) promotes the Project+ exam for people interested in project management to earn certifications. The exam helps to validate the various skills, including business and communication skills, that an individual would need to lead projects confidently toward on-time and on-budget completion.

The purpose of this book is to help you pass the CompTIA Project+ Exam PK0-005. As you approach the final validation of your project management knowledge before taking this exam, this book will help prepare you for the types of questions and content that you might encounter on the exam itself. Remember, because of the broad range of knowledge and fields that use project management, this should not be the only resource you use to prepare for the exam. It will be important to use study guides and other exam resources in your studies. The more varied resources to which you expose yourself, the greater the probability of a successful result on the exam.

One such resource you should consider is the CompTIA Project+ Study Guide: Exam PK0-005 Third Edition by Kim Heldman (Sybex, 2022). It provides a great overview, reference, and additional review questions as you strive for certification in your project management career.

How This Book Is Organized

This book consists of six chapters, with the first four based on one primarily dedicated to the four domains in the CompTIA Project+ objectives for the PK0-005 exam. The domains for the exam are not evenly weighted with the first two domains, “Project Management Concepts” and “Project Life Cycle Phases” representing 33% and 30% of the examination, respectively. Moreover, those two domains have a much wider scope of material to go over. Accordingly, you will find material that belongs in Domain 1.0 in Chapters 3 and 4. This allows for a complete and proportional covering of all the concepts you will need for the exam and, more importantly, in your project management career. The book also has two chapters that are meant to simulate the exam based on a variety of the questions from all four domains. The chapters are organized as follows:

  • Chapter 1, “Project Management Concepts (Domain 1.0),” covers the basic concepts of project management, including project characteristics, comparison of Agile vs. Waterfall project management approaches, change control, schedule development, communications management, effective meeting management, as well as team and resource management.
  • Chapter 2, “Project Life Cycle Phases (Domain 2.0),” focuses on the five project phases: Discovery/Concept Preparation, Initiation, Planning, Execution, and Closing.
  • Chapter 3, “Tools and Documentation (Domain 3.0),” delves into communication methods, project management productivity tools, quality, and performance to inform project decisions. Additionally, it covers quality management concepts and performance management concepts, and project procurement and vendor selection concepts from Domain 1.0.
  • Chapter 4, “Basics of IT and Governance (Domain 4.0),” covers basic environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors related to project management, reviews information security concepts impacting project management, and explores compliance and privacy considerations. Similar to Chapter 3, this chapter covers a topic from Domain 1.0. This time you will find questions related to risk management.
  • Chapter 5 and Chapter 6 each consist of practice exams, representing the mix that you will see on the actual exam from each of the domains. They also carry a representative time limit so that you can simulate the testing experience as a part of your preparation.

How to Use This Book and the Interactive Online Learning Environment and Test Bank

This book includes 1,000 practice test questions, which will help you get ready to pass the Project+ exam. The interactive online learning environment that accompanies the CompTIA Project+ practice tests provides a large and varied test bank to help you prepare for the certification exam and increase your chances of passing the first time. There’s a tremendous value in taking practice questions as often as possible, even leading up to your actual test. Don’t worry if you start to recognize questions from earlier practice runs… that just means you’re learning the material and committing it to memory.

The test bank also includes a practice exam. Take the practice exams just as if you were taking the actual exam (without any reference material). As a general rule, you should be consistently making 85% or better before taking the exam.

Congratulations on investing in your career and your future as a project manager.
