Refactor

Refactor is the process of redesigning the workload to be cloud native. This type of migration pattern is, in essence, a rewrite of the application to align with the CNMM discussion in Chapter 1, Introducing Cloud Native Architecture, add automation, and architect the application to have a cloud native design. While rehost and replatform are more aligned to what is usually thought of as a migration, refactoring an application during the migration process is becoming increasingly popular as companies realize that lift-and-shift movement to the cloud will not let them realize the benefits from their business case. Refactoring still applies to migrations since, in most cases, the data is being transformed to a newer database engine (in other words, NoSQL), the application is being redesigned to decouple the service components (in other words, microservices) and, most importantly, the business logic stays the same (or is enhanced) during this process, as seen in the following diagram:
