CHAPTER 10

LEADING PEOPLE

As we've already seen, to work with project management is always being between the frontiers of what is and what is not possible to do. That's why it is fundamental to have an impeccable team and leadership.

You have to imagine Mr. Edward A. Murphy, the famous guy who created a law that bears his own name, as one of your team members. He will always be there to tell you that “if something can go wrong, it will definitely go wrong.”

Leading and inspiring the team towards a superior performance is one of the most critical tasks that the project manager and his or her team must accomplish.

We have to remember that what we have in front of computers and machines are in fact people who have programmed them or just operate them, and these people are constantly under a level of great stress. Because of that, they need to be inspired and led in the most effective manner.

Leading a project means listening carefully to what the team, sponsor, client, and other stakeholders have to say, it is the only way to obtain a real understanding of everybody's needs.

Changing a project manager during the advanced phases of a project clearly opens opportunities to undesired changes in scope, thus increasing the chances of failure.

images RISKS, SCOPE

A base of power and leadership is built on integrity, constant example, and coherence in attitudes, but never on a hierarchical position or fear.

In order for a project to succeed, the team members need to trust the professionals who lead the work.

Managing the stakeholders is as important as knowing the scope of what needs to be done. If you do not know who exerts a positive or negative influence on the work, you will not be capable of identifying all the risks that might happen.

Conflicts are part of the job. It is important to understand that not every conflict is bad and destructive. Oftentimes conflicts bring about change and new attitudes and perspectives to the team.

A team is a group of team with diverse skills, committed to a common objective. A soccer team would not be a team if there were 11 goalkeepers. Diversity makes the team.

Here are some words that characterize a team: trust, respect, diversity, good relationships, critical sense, and common purpose.

Do not think that the bigger the team is, the more powerful it will be. Many times a critical and complex project will not need too many people. Maybe all it needs is really competent people!
